In a unanimous decision, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been elected as the new president of the Janata Dal (United), succeeding Lalan Singh, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Singh's removal is being attributed to his perceived proximity to the JDU's alliance partner, Lalu Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal, fueling concerns of a potential takeover by RJD's Tejashwi Yadav. However, Yadav dismissed these claims weeks ago, accusing the BJP of spreading rumors to destabilize the JDU-RJD alliance. The move, initially contested by Singh, aims to establish a singular command within the party amidst internal debates.

India has released the second installment of $2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), completing its annual commitment of $5 million for 2023-24. The first tranche was given in November 2022. UNRWA provides direct relief and aid programs to registered Palestinian refugees and is almost entirely funded by voluntary UN member contributions. The agency has struggled amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, appreciating India's "generous contribution" during difficult times. India's funding aims to support UNRWA's core services like healthcare, education and social services for Palestinian refugees. The latest tranche was handed over by India's Charge d'Affaires in Palestine, underscoring New Delhi's continued backing of the agency's activities in the region. Since 2018, India has donated $30 million to UNRWA to date.

The Indian Navy has unveiled a new design for the epaulettes worn by senior officers, drawing inspiration from the royal seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Unveiled initially for the top three ranks of Admiral, Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral, the move replaces the previous colonial-era design featuring "Nelson's Ring." Announced by PM Modi during Navy Day celebrations, the new epaulettes integrate the naval ensign and reflect India's maritime heritage, shedding vestiges of the mentality of slavery. This follows previous Indianization efforts banning batons, allowing traditional wears, and reviewing ranks for over 65,000 sailors. While sailors will get new India-centric designations, officers' ranks will remain unchanged for now.

Delhi Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have drawn parallels between the explosion near the Israel Embassy on Tuesday night and a similar IED blast at the same location in 2021. Both incidents involved suspects carefully scoping out CCTV cameras, escaping by auto-rickshaw, and hiding out in Delhi's Jamia area. In both cases, typed letters with threatening language referencing "jihad" against Israel were left at the site. Though suspects were identified after the 2021 blast, no arrests have yet been made. With embassies on high alert after the latest explosion, investigators are concerned by the striking similarities suggesting the possible re-emergence of an unapprehended terror network targeting Israeli interests. Four employees of Air India SATS (AISATS) and an Indian passenger were arrested at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport for alleged involvement in a human trafficking operation. CISF personnel uncovered the suspicious activity when immigration officials flagged a UK-bound passenger's doubtful documents. Further scrutiny via CCTV footage showed AISATS staffers at the check-in counter using invalid documents to facilitate boarding for the passenger and two others. The four staffers - Rohan Verma, Mohammad Jahangir, Yash, and Akshay Narang - along with passenger Diljot Singh were handed to police. AISATS CEO Sanjay Gupta said the company played a key role in working with authorities to thwart the trafficking attempt. The arrests come after a recent case where a charter jet to Nicaragua was grounded in France over trafficking concerns.

An Israeli military investigation concluded that Israeli soldiers mistakenly killed three hostages during an offensive in Gaza in December 2022. The soldiers had raided a building days earlier but ignored cries for "help" from the hostages inside, believing it to be a deception by Hamas. After exiting and killing five escaping Hamas members on December 10, the hostages likely fled. On December 15th, soldiers shot dead two instantly and wounded a third, who cried "they're shooting at me" before commanders asked him to approach and he was killed. The findings reveal Israeli forces failed to properly identify the hostages when storming the building, leading to their deaths by friendly fire.
