A magnitude 3.6 earthquake shook Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir at 8:53 am, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. The quake, at a depth of 5 km, prompted NCS to tweet the details. This follows a similar incident in central Assam yesterday, where a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit East Karbi Anglong district. NCS, the Government of India's earthquake monitoring agency, continues its vigilance. No major damage reported in both cases, but locals in various districts felt the tremors. Earthquake preparedness remains crucial in seismic-prone regions.

The Met Office expanded weather warnings across the United Kingdom on Monday as an icy blast of Arctic air brings snow and freezing temperatures. Yellow and amber alerts now encompass nearly all of the UK through Thursday. The warnings highlight risks of travel chaos, power cuts and infrastructure damage from accumulating snow and ice. Forecasters predict up to 10 centimeters of snow in Scotland and northern England. Bitterly cold temperatures raise health concerns as well. The expansive alerts come on the heels of recent deadly flooding across Britain. With no reprieve in sight, the Met Office urges vigilance and preparation as the unsettled winter weather persists.
I am devastated by todays event. I considered not posting images that show terrible tragedy to people’s homes. I want to make it clear that if there are any news outlets out there that need free content to raise awareness, let me know, nobody should make money on this! pic.twitter.com/CaNih72v6Z

The volcano that erupted near the Icelandic fishing village of Grindavik on Sunday, has now started sending lava flowing into the town engulfing at least three homes. Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdittir described a "very serious situation" after the buildings went up in flames. Professor Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson of the University of Iceland explained that the eruption is "somewhat bigger" than earlier events in the series of eruptions in the southwest peninsula over the last three years, which were "quite benign and located far from roads and infrastructure." Prof Gudmundsson said there has been "unrest and volcanism" in the area "for years," but the defences built near Grindavik in December would likely not be "big enough" if the eruption continues long and grows larger.

A volcano has erupted once again in the southwest peninsula of Iceland, reminiscent of the molten rock spectacle observed just last December. The eruption, which commenced north of the town of Grindavik, prompted an overnight evacuation. This raises critical questions regarding the stability of the region and the effectiveness of existing preventive measures. The recurrence of volcanic activity presents a significant challenge for authorities, especially considering that efforts to mitigate risks from fissures in December now appear inadequate. The eruption's proximity to previous incidents intensifies the need for a comprehensive and efficient strategy to protect vulnerable communities. This unsettling development highlights the relentless and unpredictable nature of Iceland's volcanic landscape, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in managing such geological phenomena.

Volcano near Grindavik, Iceland, erupted for the fifth time in two years, leading to the evacuation of residents due to heightened seismic activity. The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported a crack opening north of Grindavik, prompting evacuation around 3 am. Live images captured dramatic scenes of glowing lava jets against the winter sky. This follows a previous eruption on December 18, necessitating evacuations. Grindavik, with around 4,000 residents, faces recurrent safety measures in this small fishing village. Iceland, boasting 33 active volcano systems, experiences frequent volcanic activity due to its unique geological positioning.

Amid worsening air quality, Delhi-NCR enforces anti-pollution curbs under GRAP-III. The Commission for Air Quality Management reintroduces restrictions, banning non-essential construction, BS-III petrol, and BS-IV diesel vehicles. The central commission advises state governments to consider suspending classes up to Grade 5. The decision follows an emergency meeting due to a sudden deterioration in air quality, with the 24-hour AQI surpassing 400, categorizing it as 'severe.' The 8-point action plan includes increased road cleaning, water sprinkling, public transport enhancement, and stricter bans on construction activities. Measures aim to combat the escalating pollution levels in the region.
