India is set to introduce GPS-based toll collection systems, replacing traditional toll plazas, starting April. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari aims to reduce traffic congestion and charge drivers based on exact distances traveled. The system, tested alongside FASTags, employs an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system with highway cameras. This technology analyzes vehicle movement, calculates toll charges based on distances covered, and automatically deducts fees from linked accounts. The move aims to enhance efficiency, eliminate cash transactions, and streamline toll payment processes, benefiting drivers on national highways.
